JazzSingerThe Rutgers-Camden Jazz Ensemble provides a challenging, yet supportive environment for musically skilled students to experience the long tradition of jazz in its many stylistic forms.

The course is taught as a two semester sequence: the Fall semester focuses on early jazz through the swing era; the Spring semester focuses on bebop through the late twentieth-century.

The emphasis is on learning authentic repertory and playing classic arrangements. While opportunities will exist for solos, students need not be experienced improvisers to join the RCJE; most of our work will be creating a smooth, professional ensemble sound.

Performing with the Jazz Ensemble

  • Rehearsals are held once a week.
  • There will be several performances on campus each semester.
  • The RCJE is open to non-music majors. All students need to have developed musical skills: ability to read music; at least an intermediate level of facility of your instrument; and the willingness to practice outside of rehearsals and contribute to the group.

Audition for the Jazz Ensemble

Auditions will be held Friday, April 29, or by appointment. Contact Professor Eric Polack for information and audition materials.
